Origami special events
Three-dimensional origami star by Miyuki Kawamura, from Origamido's collection IPP26 will feature a series of special origami-related events, to be conducted by Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander of the Origamido studio in Haverhill, Massachusetts on Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29. Michael and Richard will give beginner/intermediate and advanced origami lessons to interested IPPers and their families, and discuss the links between origami and puzzles. Michael notes on his web site that "Origami forms and methods make excellent tools for exploring and explaining many kinds of arithmetic and mathematical concepts—one need not have any knowledge of math to do origami. Folded paper designs can be an eloquent way of demonstrating mathematical and geometric principles. "The areas of study can include: counting; computational skills; fractions; percentages; geometric shapes; square area; volume; set theory; statistics; trigonometry; algebraic expressions; plane geometry; solid geometry; Pythagorean theorem... the list goes on and on." We will have other origami experts at IPP26, and a special exhibit of remarkable origami models. We have invited MIT professor Erik Demaine, an expert in the mathematics of origami and a puzzle collector, to give a presentation to IPP26. | |
